Chocolate and your pets: The Truth

We've had a lot of people writing to our resident Vet and asking about Chocolate and their animals. Maybe its because Valentines day is around the corner- or Easter! Either way, we've got answers for you!

CHOCOLATE: THE TRUTH

Q: My boyfriend insists that a small amount of chocolate is safe to give to my Chihuahua. My Chihuahua begs for it and he doesn’t seem to have any problems after he eats chocolate. So, should I allow my boyfriend to continue sharing his M&M’s with my dog?
A: How many times have you heard the saying, "Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him"? Well, I’m sure you heard this multiple times because it can be true!! The truth is that chocolate contains theobromine, a methylxanthine compound similar to caffeine. Methylxanthines negatively affects the heart and nervous system. The clinical signs can include: Increased heart rate, muscle tremors, vomiting, diarrhea, hyper excitability, etc. In short if sufficient amounts are given, chocolate is toxic and can kill your dog. Furthermore, there is no specific antidote for chocolate poisoning. So even though your dog doesn’t seem to be affected by it, chocolate can be detrimental to your Chihuahua’s health and should be avoided.

Bottom line? Don't feed your beloved pet chocolate!

:)
